KOLKATA/SINGUR, Sept 5 : Talks brokered by Governor Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi to end the Singur small car project imbroglio were held at Raj Bhavan today without any immediate solution in sight and both sides ~ the state government and the Trinamul Congress-led Opposition combine ~ agreed to sit for one more round of discussion tomorrow. There were initial hiccups as the talks couldn't begin at 10 a.m. as had been planned, but were rescheduled at 4 p.m. The chief minister dragged the Governor into a controversy of sorts when he contradicted the reasons given by the Governor for the postponement. Though it was given out that the talks were held in a “constructive spirit”, insiders said the state government ~ represented by industries minister Mr Nirupam Sen and top officials ~ skirted the crucial question of return of land to the unwilling farmers. Instead, they spoke at length of the economic rehabilitation package. The Governor reportedly intervened at one stage and asked the state government to place concrete proposals for arriving at a negotiated settlement. He also asked Trinamul representatives to examine if alternative land would solve the problem. The Opposition camp demanded the state government give details of farmers who had received compensation cheques, which, would make it clear how much land belonged to the unwilling farmers. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Partha Chatterjee, told the media that they were heading for a solution, but Trinamul insiders said “many hurdles are yet to be crossed”. The Governor said : “Discussions were held for about three hours. The dialogue was useful and held in a constructive spirit”.The industries minister later told the media “We want a proper solution to the problem taking into account the ground reality.” Earlier in the day the Governor said the state government wanted some time for which he decided to begin the talks from 4 p.m. "Everyone wants a solution to the problem. I have expectations from the state government, the Trinamul, the Tatas and their stake holders. I wanted the NH 2 to be cleared when the talks begin. The state government wanted the agitation to be put on hold. But I believe to organise peaceful and lawful agitation is a democratic right of the citizens.” However, within half an hour Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee told the media at Writers’ Buildings that the state government hadn't sought any time from the Governor for deferring the talks. “The decision to defer the talks was taken by the Governor. We were ready with our documents for the talks,” he said even though none of the government representatives turned up at Raj Bhavan at the schedule time. “I met the Governor last night, and discussed how to make the meeting fruitful. He urged the Opposition to call off their agitation temporarily and lift the blockade on Durgapur Expressway, the CM said. The home secretary Mr AM Chakraborty, visited Singur and said one flank of Durgapur Expressway was open for traffic.
