Ray of hope for Singur as talks begin today

KOLKATA: With key players of the high-voltage Nano drama speaking in tempered tones on Thursday, the eve of the crucial meeting initiated by Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi between Mamata Banerjee and West Bengal government, observers were sensing a breakthrough in the Singur logjam. In Delhi, Ratan Tata said he was hopeful of launching the Nano ‘‘as we had planned’’ and the company was doing ‘‘everything possible’’ to meet the deadline. As it’s crucial that the little car rolls out of Singur for meeting the deadline, it would indicate Tata is hopeful of the standoff being resolved in the near future. Mamata, who has been strident in her demands and on her attack on the state government, appeared mellow on Thursday. The Trinamool Congress chief indicated that she was also looking for a solution while urging her party supporters in Singur to be ‘‘forward looking’’. She faces pressure from her own supporters in Singur to not create a situation that forces the Tatas to leave the state and thus adversely affect the local economy. The urban middle class is, of course, incensed with her reckless brinkmanship. The state government, too, has been talking of compromises. While it remains opposed to return of land from the Tata factory — which it says would be illegal — it has offered to develop the 47.11 acres owned by West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation within the Nano factory compound, set up commercial stalls there and give them free to the landlosers. Whether this will satisfy Mamata is not known, but there is a decided sense of urgency among all players to find a solution quickly. Both, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Mamata Banerjee, are under tremendous pressure to find one swiftly, possibly by Friday. (END) Source: Times of India
