Farmers want land back or better package

By Sabyasachi Roy
SINGUR, Sept 1: Unwilling farmers who were forced to part with their land for the Tata small car project may have been rejuvenated by Miss Mamata Banerjee's agitation but feel it is time to work out a better rehabilitation package. The Statesman found young members of these unwilling families sitting in groups near the Dharna mancha, discussing the present status of the agitation. They wondered how long the agitation would continue and whether their Didi would be able to recover the land that was forcefully acquired for the Tata small car factory. One person said the agitation against acquisition of farmland was first staged by the unwilling farmers of Singur and in the long run the Trinamul Congress along with other political parties had hijacked their protest, albeit giving it greater momentum. Another person said the support of the political parties had made the state government take note, but so far it hadn't yielded any results. These people sounded hopeful that if Miss Banerjee's agitation fails to force the government to return their land, at least they would have to announce a better rehabilitation package for the unwilling farmers. Mr Sanatan Maity of Beraberi in Singur, whose father is one of the unwilling famers, said: “We have been informed by the local senior Trinamul leaders that the state government had already requested our Didi to discuss the issue and it seems that the state government is ready to announce a better rehabilitation package. Now our fate rests on Didi whether she would agree to talks or not. But, for me it's time for a solution, both the government and Didi need to discuss benefits for the farmers.” Mr Pallav Ghosh asked: “How long will this continue? Our land has been acquired and we have been deprived from cultivating our land for the past three years. We are the real losers here. We have been inspired by the agitation, but there is no certainty that we will get back our land. The agitation can only force the government to give us a better rehabilitation package, but that can happen only if Didi agrees to sit for talks.” Mr Shyamal Das, who had joined the Trinamul Congress last year after deserting the CPI-M, said: “All the farmers here go to work to earn their livelihood. So it is quite impossible for them to come every day and participate in the dharna. Why doesn't the Tata authority show any interest to discuss the matter with us. If they come here for talks with the farmers, the problem might be solved.” ( END) Source : The Statesman
