Ready or not, win a nano this Puja!

By Kanchan Siddiqui
BURDWAN, Sept. 7: In another controversy involving the notorious small car, a Puja committee in Burdwan is selling tickets for a lucky draw, advertising a Nano (see photo, circled) as the first prize. This has caused an uproar in the town known as the red bastion of Bengal. The Robin Hood Athletic Club in Burdwan town has organised a lucky draw to mark the 46th year of its community Durga Puja. The draw, according to the club executives is planned to help generate funds for the club. They plan to sell 3,000 tickets worth Rs 100 each which is expected to generate a fund worth Rs 3 lakh. The club has offered Nano ~ the much controversial small car as the first prize of the draw. Though the fate of the commercial production of the car still remains uncertain, as Mr Ratan Tata has threatened to move the Nano factory from Singur, the organisers are confident that by January 2009 Nano would be a common vehicle seen on the roads.Mr Saikat Roy, secretary, Robin Hood AC said: “We are sure the car will be available in the market by January when our lucky draw is scheduled. We expect tickets to sell quickly because we are offering Nano as the first prize.” The decision by the club has triggered public debate as the Opposition suspects the CPI-M's clever manipulation to help popularise Nano among the locals by using a simple lottery organised by a club. Mr Azizul Haq Mondal, district general secretary, Congress, who is also a lawyer with the district court said: “The law doesn't permit any individual or organisation to lure the masses in the name of an item that is yet to come in the market. It's illegal.” He added: “We suspect this was a trick by the CPI-M to make locals favour Nano. We may seek legal action against the club.” Mr Roy, club secretary however said: “We do not have a political motive behind this. People must take it sportingly.”(END) Source : The Statesman.
